How the Collection is built

Every hotel in the Collection is one we booked anonymously through public channels, paid for in full at the published rate, and stayed in for at least two nights. No hotel knows when we are coming. No hotel is given the chance to prepare a special experience. What we describe is what every guest receives.

We do not accept complimentary stays, press trips, or hosted experiences of any kind. We do not accept advertising or sponsored content from hotels. No property is shown its entry before publication, and no property can alter, approve, or suppress one.

What we leave out

We stay in far more hotels than we publish. A property that does not clear The Outlux 100, or that we would not book again ourselves, is left out. We don’t write it up and we don’t explain why. Being left out is the only judgment we pass.

The photography

Every photograph on this site was taken by the editor, at the property, during the stay it illustrates. We do not use hotel press images, marketing libraries, stock photography, or images generated by software. The room you see is the room we booked and paid for, in the condition we found it — not a staged suite prepared for a photographer.

Images are colour-corrected for consistency.

Guests and staff do not appear. Anonymity runs in both directions: nobody working at a property knows they are being written about, and nobody staying at one ends up in our frame.

Photography produced for a client under Work With Us is commissioned work and never appears in the Collection or anywhere else on this site.

Escapes, and how we’re paid

Outlux Escapes is our trip-planning and booking service. Clients pay Outlux a planning fee. When Escapes books a client into a hotel, the hotel usually also pays Outlux a standard industry commission, in the same way it would pay any travel advisor. That commission is paid by the hotel, not the client, at rates that are broadly the same across the industry, so no property is more attractive to us than another, and the client never pays more than the hotel’s own rate.

The Collection and Escapes are kept apart. Whether a hotel pays commission has no bearing on whether it is in the Collection; a hotel enters the Collection only by clearing The Outlux 100 on an anonymous, paid stay. Escapes books clients into Collection properties first, and into other properties only when the client’s trip requires it.

Outlux also offers private property audits and consulting to hotels. We never consult for a property we have published or intend to publish, and consulting work is never the basis for a place in the Collection.
